For even the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve...

Mark 10:45

At First Southern, we don’t just go to church—we serve as the hands and feet of Jesus together.

First Teams are the volunteers who make ministry happen every week at First Southern. From greeting at the doors, to rocking babies, to running sound and serving coffee, First Teams are how ordinary people use their gifts so others can encounter Christ. When you serve on a First Team, you’re not just filling a spot—you’re stepping into your calling as part of the body of Christ.

First Team Testimonials

“I thought pouring coffee would be a small thing, but I've found it’s a doorway to ministry. Every Sunday I get to be the first smile someone sees. I pray over the pots as I brew them, and ask God to use our lobby conversations for His glory. Serving on the Coffee Team has shown me that there is no such thing as a ‘small’ role in the Kingdom.”

– Amanda, First Team – Coffee & Hospitality

“Before I joined the Worship Team, I mostly just watched from the pew. Now, when I step onto the platform, I’m reminded that this isn’t a performance—it’s service. We’re leading our church family to see Jesus more clearly. Being part of a First Team has deepened my own worship and made Sunday feel like a holy responsibility.”

– Erin, First Team – Worship

OUR DISCIPLESHIP PATH

We want every person at First to move from watching ministry to owning ministry.

Our simple path:
Gather on Sunday.
Sit at a First Table.
Serve on a First Team.
Joining a First Team is often the turning point where church stops being “their church” and becomes “my church.” It’s where gifts get discovered, friendships deepen, and faith moves from theory to practice.
“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.”
– 1 Peter 4:10

Volunteer FAQ

How Do I Join a First Team?

We’ve made it as simple as possible to take your next step:
Pray and consider where you might fit.
Think about your gifts, your personality, and your schedule. Do you love people? Prefer behind-the-scenes? Enjoy working with kids? Music? Technology?
Use the form below and add your area of interest in the message box.
Submit the “Join a First Team” form.
One of our First Team Leaders will contact you, answer questions, explain expectations, and walk you through next steps, including any training or background checks (especially for Kids and Students teams).

What if I’m not sure where I’m gifted?

You don’t have to have it all figured out. Start with an area that seems like a fit, and we’ll walk with you. Often, God clarifies gifts as you begin serving. Many teams offer a “shadow” or “try it out” Sunday so you can see what serving looks like before committing for a season.

Do I have to be a member to serve on a First Team?

Some teams do require membership or a completed “Discover First” process (especially Kids/Students). Other teams are open to regular attenders who are ready to get involved. When you fill out the form, we’ll guide you to the right next step.

I’m nervous about serving with kids. How do you handle that?

That’s a good thing—it means you understand the weight of the responsibility. We provide training, clear guidelines, and ongoing support for every First Kids and Students Team member. You will never be left alone without support, and we always prioritize child safety and wise boundaries.

I have limited mobility or health concerns. Is there still a place for me?

Absolutely. There are roles that can be done seated, behind the scenes, or at a lighter physical pace. When you fill out the form, let us know your limitations and we’ll help find a good fit.
