A First Table is a small group of people who meet regularly to grow in Christ, build deep relationships, and live on mission in our community.

What Is a First Table?

A small group of people from First who regularly gather to read Scripture, share life, pray, and care for one another.
Some First Tables meet in homes. Some meet at the church. Some gather early before work or after the kids are in bed. The setting can change—but the purpose is the same: to follow Jesus together, not alone.

Why First Tables Matter?

Sunday worship is essential—but it’s not enough by itself. You need more than a row of chairs; you need a table.
At First Pomeroy, our discipleship path is simple:
  • Gather on Sunday.
  • Sit at a First Table.
  • Serve on a First Team.

What Happens at a First Table?

Every First Table has its own personality, but most gatherings include:
  • Connection – Catching up on life, sharing a meal or snacks, and getting to know one another.
  • Scripture – Discussing the Bible together (often synced with Sunday’s message or a chosen study).
  • Prayer – Praying for each other’s needs, our church, and our community.
  • Care – Encouraging one another, following up on needs, and planning ways to serve together.
Think of it as a regular rhythm of gather, listen, share, and pray—simple, reproducible, and centered on Jesus.

First Tables are built to fit real life. We’re intentionally multiplying groups that reflect our church family and our community.
Examples of First Tables you might find:

  • Empty Nesters
  • Men’s / Women’s Tables
  • Weeknight Evenings
  • Sunday Morning / Evening
  • In homes across our area
  • At the church building
  • Occasionally in restaurants or coffee shops
As new people come and new leaders are trained, we’ll continue to launch more First Tables so everyone who calls First “home” can sit at a table.

How Do I Join a First Table?
Fill out the form below and our team will reach out with current First Tables that fit your schedule and needs. Choose from one of the options that our team sends to you.

The leader of the group you choose will reach out with details on when and where they meet.

Show up once—then come back again. Give it a few weeks. Relationships take time, but it’s worth it.

Our encouragement: commit for a season and see what God does.
Do I have to be a member of First to join a First Table?
No. First Tables are a great place to start if you’re exploring First or still deciding about membership. You’re welcome to jump in.
What about childcare?
Each First Table handles childcare a little differently. Some include kids in the group time, some rotate sitters, and some meet while kids are in student or kids’ ministry at the church. When you inquire about a Table, ask how that group handles children—we’ll help you find a good fit for your family.
I’m new and a little nervous. What should I expect my first time?
Expect friendly faces, simple conversation, and a relaxed environment. You won’t be asked to pray out loud or read Scripture unless you’re comfortable. You can ease in at your own pace.
How often do First Tables meet?
Most First Tables meet weekly or every other week, for about 60–90 minutes. Specific details are listed for each group.
What if the first group I try doesn’t feel like a good fit?
That’s okay. Sometimes it takes a try or two to find the right Table. Let us know, and we’ll gladly help you connect somewhere else. The goal is not just attending a group, but finding a place where you can truly grow and belong.

You don’t have to be a Bible scholar or have all the answers to lead a First Table. We’re looking for people who:
  • Love Jesus and His church
  • Are willing to open their lives and, when possible, their homes
  • Will care for people and point them to God’s Word
  • We provide training, curriculum guidance, and ongoing support. If God is stirring your heart to shepherd others, we’d love to talk with you.

  • Real conversation, not performance. You don’t have to have it all together or know all the answers.
  • Open Bibles and open hearts. God’s Word is central, and everyone is invited to participate.
  • Shared burdens and shared joys. When life hits, your First Table becomes your first call.
  • A family within the family. In a growing church, this is where you are known by name and loved in practical ways.
